Dr. Richard Upton Joins BBN Technologies
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Richard A. Upton, Ph.D. has joined BBN Technologies, a technology solutions firm, to investigate a new potential market focused on healthcare informatics. Upton will mine BBN's expertise in intelligent systems, speech recognition, natural language processing, distributed information sharing, and network security to identify solutions that enable enhanced, more cost effective care.
Before joining BBN, Upton was responsible for all business development and strategy for a BAE Systems North America line of business as vice president, business development, National Security Solutions. In his previous position as vice president, marketing and strategic development at ALPHATECH, Upton played a key role in quadrupling revenues and funding over a five-year period, while helping the company enter new strategic markets. ALPHATECH's performance led to BAE's November 2004 acquisition of the company for double its then current revenue.
Upton earned his bachelors degree in mathematics and masters in computer and information sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his doctorate in computer Science at the University of Maryland and sits on the board of advisors for the Computer Science Department today. Upton is also on the board of advisors of two start-up companies focusing on security, privacy, and identity management.
