Nuance Revamps Dragon Dictate for Mac
Nuance Communications has unveiled Dragon Dictate for Mac, version 4, a more personalized update of speech recognition software for the Mac that includes new features such as audio file transcription capabilities.
"We've updated a lot of the application support for voice control, [in addition to] full text control for pages, and we've added some much better voice control for Gmail," says Peter Mahoney, chief marketing officer at Nuance.
Mahoney says that the new version also features improvements in transcription capabilities, with dictation speeds up to three times faster than typing. The update allows users to create a transcription profile with any 90-second audio segment from any speaker. Podcasts, for example, can be transcribed. Lectures can also be transcribed as long as there is one single speaker; conversations cannot be transcribed.
"The transcription element is compelling because it's providing something that wasn't there before," Mahoney says. "Not everyone may use this, but certainly a lot of people are going to see value out of this new capability."
Dragon Dictate for Mac, version 4, also has more memory than previous versions, with a pure 64-bit application. Additionally, users can control Gmail inboxes within a Safari or Firefox browser using voice commands, and the solution also provides full text control in Gmail. Dragon Dictate supports full text control in Apple Pages 4.3 via voice control.
Dragon Dictate for Mac is based on a large vocabulary speech recognition engine but is designed for dictation, according to Mahoney, and uses the same technology found in Nuance Cloud Services. It is different from some telephony applications that are more focused on grammar-based speech recognition, Mahoney says.
"Dragon Dictate for Mac, version 4, is a very feature-rich and high performance voice application for the Mac. This means that it does everything from full dictation to full computer control, to writing voice macros," Mahoney explains. "It's a very robust application and it's very, very accurate."
The English version of Dragon Dictate for Mac, version 4, is available immediately starting at $199.99, through Nuance as well as the company's resellers. Dragon Dictate for Mac offers special upgrade pricing for current Dragon Dictate for Mac and MacSpeech Scribe registered users.
