Jane Phillips Medical Center Increases Safety Measures with New Voice Alert System from Wizzard Software

PITTSBURGH - Jane Phillips Medical Center (JPMC) has licensed AT&T Natural Voices from Wizzard for an internal alert system.  JPMC is a not-for-profit, acute care hospital, with the main campus located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  Established in 1952, Jane Phillips Medical Center offers a wide range of services, including general medicine, surgery, cardiopulmonary care, maternal and infant care, cancer treatment, geriatric care, orthopedics and physical medicine.

"We did not want an unintelligible, synthesized voice giving critical information. Every second counts and we wanted the message to be clear," said JPMC programmer analyst Trenton South.  "Without AT&T Natural Voices, we would not have been able to release our solution."

JPMC faced several problems when attempting to disseminate information throughout the hospital.  The first problem was that all areas of the hospital were not able to hear the overhead announcements clearly, even though the codes were announced over a PA system.  The second problem was that the PA system once quit working when a code needed to be called.

To solve these problems, South created Code Alert using AT&T Natural Voices to enable it with voice.  To send a message throughout the hospital, an operator chooses the appropriate code color from a visual selection and types the location of the alert.  The message is broadcast across the network and a listening module in each client computer grabs the information, brings up a color-coded window on the screen, and speaks the message in a voice.
