Google Announces On-Device Speech Recognition Software
Google held its annual developer conference in California last week, and announced it has reduced its speech recognition software to 1/25th its original size. Why is this significant? According to CEO Sundar Pichai it means the speech recognition software that has lived on Google’s cloud servers can now be installed in Pixel smartphones Google says it will launch later this year. Simply put, this change will allow the devices to respond to queries far more quickly.
According to Wired, "In a series of demos Tuesday, Google showed phones that could recognize words the moment they’re uttered, instead of shipping audio to a distant server. The quicker response has the potential to change how people relate to their gadgets. In one scenario shown, Google’s virtual assistant appeared strikingly more powerful and private than competitors such as Siri."
