Avaya Looks to Acquire Ubiquity Software

Communications network developer Avaya today made an offer to acquire Ubiquity Software Corp., a developer of session initiated protocol (SIP) end-user applications, for approximately $144 million. The deal is expected to close within the next six months.

Ubiquity, which is based in England, develops and markets SIP-based communications software for fixed and mobile communications service providers, systems integrators, independent software vendors and channel partners.

"Ubiquity's technologies represent the leading solution for service providers that bridge non-integrated technologies," says Jonathan Varman, an Avaya spokesman.

"The Ubiquity acquisition will accelerate Avaya's value proposition to customers, and does so by providing a single platform that can deliver scaleable and distributed communications applications for both service providers and end users," Varman continues. "By integrating Ubiquity's SIP-based application servers and development tools with Avaya's existing telecommunications solutions, Avaya can provide an opportunity for .NET and J2E developers to leverage a single platform to integrate their communications servers into their business processes."

Ian McLaren, CEO of Ubiquity, called the acquisition offer by Avaya. "an important milestone" in his company's development. "We believe that there are strong synergies between Ubiquity's core software platform, service creation framework and applications and Avaya's portfolio of enterprise products. As part of the Avaya group, we believe that Ubiquity will be well positioned to gain access to Avaya's customer base and the resources to exploit the opportunities we see in the emerging telecommunications marketplace," he said in a statement.
