AT&T Adds Text-by-Voice Capability to Amazon Alexa

AT&T is launching the AT&T Send Message skill for Amazon's Alexa-enabled devices, enabling users of Amazon's Echo and other smart home devices to send text messages simply by talking.

Alexa Skills are voice-driven capabilities that enhance the functionality of Alexa devices, including Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. Alexa is Amazon's cloud-based voice service, to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather, and now the AT&T Send Message skill.

AT&T is the first carrier to offer this skill that lets users send text messages from their mobile numbers to their predetermined lists of contacts.

Users ask Alexa to have AT&T text a friend and Alexa prompts them to dictate their text messages. Users can add up to 10frequent contacts to the skill so they can send them text messages without typing on their smartphones.

"Amazon Echo is ahead of the curve in terms of voice recognition technology and functionality," said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president of device and network services marketing at AT&T, in a statement. "AT&T is the first carrier to bring this unique skill to a product already known for innovation. We're always working to bring simple solutions for our customers to stay in touch. In the tradition of NumberSync, another solution that was introduced at AT&T first, the Send Message Skill gives our customers another easy and convenient way to communicate."
